ABOUT THE ARTIST

Karen Krieger is a painter who works out of her studio in Needham, MA. Her current body of work is influenced by patterns in nature coupled with the inspiration of ancient Chinese culture and art. Karen’s work examines the complex interplay between the atmosphere and the landscape; the weather and the rock. Do our eyes distinguish the floating gauze of clouds from the obscured majestic peaks, or do they merge into an ethereal scene as they are captured by the artist’s unique vision? Karen initiates her canvas with organic inspiration by using a combination of elements of chance, Taoist philosophy, traditional Chinese painting techniques and a modern western aesthetic.

As Karen paints, some of the empty space is slowly occupied by forms from the ink and pigment, while other parts of the empty space are left alone to appear to the viewer as clouds, sky, mist or distance. Sometimes these forms initially emerge as the atmosphere, with the earth slowly built in layers behind it. And in other paintings, the mountain ranges first appear. When we view a cloudy scene in nature, various parts of the scene have their own dimension, and she translates that depth for the viewer.

Karen uses a variety of materials and techniques to explore the balance in the spaces on the canvas. She enjoys working and experimenting with a broad range of materials including ink, encaustic wax, pastel, graphite and casein paint. Thus choosing the material based upon her vision for a particular painting. Often times an individual painting may be comprised of many media and painting techniques to reflect the visual depth and uncontrived rhythm of the subject matter.

Karen’s paintings provide subtle atmosphere and depth without going too far on the representational continuum so that the viewer can enjoy the contemplative space. The view of her paintings is much larger than her canvases, evoking their own introspective world.

Karen Krieger received her B.A. in philosophy and music from Brandeis University (1987) in Waltham, MA and later a certificate in graphic design from Massachusetts College of Art (1995) in Boston. Karen’s visual training began as a graphic designer and art director before she focused exclusively on her painting. She works out of her studio at Gorse Mill Studios in Needham, MA and her paintings are in private collections in the U.S. and Europe.
